Shocking Entrant to the Alex Bregman Free Agent Sweepstakes Emerges
As hope fades for the Boston Red Sox in their attempts to re-sign star free agent third baseman Alex Bregman, a shocking new team has entered the sweepstakes at the 11th hour, per reports.
Notable baseball insider and Red Sox super-fan Jarred Carrabis isn't too confident that Bregman will be returning to Beantown.
I don’t feel super great about Bregman coming back, but these things are always subject to change. Bogaerts was pretty much a done deal to return until the Padres swooped in with a crazy offer. These situations are fluid. But, yeah. Doesn’t sound promising at the moment.

He now feels there's a "mystery team" involved in the sweepstakes, that hasn't been linked to Bregman until this point.
The cat is out of the bag on Tuesday, as that 'mystery team' is reported to be the Arizona Diamondbacks.
The Arizona Diamondbacks have become a surprise entrant in the Alex Bregman sweepstakes and are ‘kicking the tires’ on the possibility. The Dbacks would certainly have the financial flexibility if they move 2B Ketel Marte and could move 3B Jordan Lawlar to 2B

As insider Bob Nightengale notes, the D-Backs would have room financially, particularly if they trade Ketel Marte, as has been rumored for a few months now. He adds that third baseman Jordan Lawlar could be shifted to second if they do sign Bregman.
The Snakes traded away 3B Eugenio Suarez at the deadline this past summer, and there is no indication that they are interested in any sort of reunion with him in free agency this offseason.
Bregman posted an .821 OPS for the Red Sox in 2025, his first season there. He was limited to 114 games due to injury, but hit 18 homers with a .360 on-base pct, while quickly establishing himself as a valuable team leader.
As for Arizona, they've already gone out and re-signed their former starting pitcher Merrill Kelly in free agency, indicating their intentions of competing again for a playoff spot, and in the very near future. Ace Corbin Burnes, recovering from Tommy John surgery, is targeting a midseason return in July.
