Seattle Mariners Sign 10-Year Veteran Outfielder

The Seattle Mariners made a quiet move that could matter a lot more than it looks on the surface.

They signed Rob Refsnyder to a one year deal, adding a veteran bat who has built a reputation for punishing left handed pitching and covering multiple spots when the lineup needs a shuffle.

Why Rob Refsnyder fits the Mariners lineup

Rob Refsnyder has been one of the better right handed platoon hitters in baseball since 2022, and the numbers back it up. Over the past four seasons, he has been a problem for southpaws, getting on base at an elite clip and bringing enough pop to do damage when pitchers make mistakes.

Seattle has been chasing more consistent offense, and this is a direct way to raise the floor in matchups where the lineup can get bogged down.

Over the past two seasons, the 34-year-old has posted a .278/.357/.476 triple-slash line, with 20 home runs, 70 RBIs, five stolen bases, and 61 runs scored across 163 games played with the Boston Red Sox.

Rob Refsnyder gives Seattle bench versatility

Refsnyder’s calling card is the bat, but the roster value comes from how many ways the Mariners can use him. He has played mostly corner outfield in recent years, with some first base experience in the past, and that gives Dan Wilson another option to spell regulars while keeping the platoon advantage in play.

The contract details also suggest Seattle sees him as more than a minor depth add, with the deal reported at $6.25 million plus incentives.

If Refsnyder hits lefties the way he has in Boston, he can slide into a role right away as a right handed complement in the outfield mix, a designated hitter option, and a backup look at first base behind Josh Naylor.

The big question is how his production translates from Fenway Park to T Mobile Park, but the underlying contact quality from 2025 points to a hitter who is still squaring the ball up.
