Cardinals Fire Sale Incoming As Multiple Big Names Become Available
With Chaim Bloom now leading the front office, the St. Louis Cardinals are reportedly “open for business”, and not just for their veterans.
According to reports from The Athletic, the team is expected to entertain trade offers for stars Nolan Arenado and Sonny Gray, along with younger, cost-controlled pieces like Brendan Donovan and Lars Nootbaar.
Both Donovan and Nootbaar could command strong returns due to team-friendly control and versatility on defense, indicating that this rebuild might go deeper than expected.
Veterans and Young Core on the Market
Bloom confirmed that Arenado and the Cardinals are ready to “find a different fit,” making it likely he’s played his last game in St. Louis.
Gray is also drawing heavy interest from multiple teams due to his one-year, $25 million contract and reliability.

That includes:
Nolan Arenado
Sonny Gray
Brendan Donovan
Lars Nootbaar
St. Louis is seeking cost-controlled pitching.
But the surprise is the availability of younger players like Donovan, Nootbaar, and Nolan Gorman. Even Pedro Páges, part of the organization’s crowded catching picture, has drawn attention from rival clubs.
Nootbaar’s offseason heel surgery might delay his 2026 debut, yet teams remain intrigued by his on-base skills and defensive reliability.
A Strong Market Could Fuel the Rebuild
MLB insider Jon Morosi reports that “numerous teams” are seeking everyday outfielders this winter, which gives the Cardinals valuable leverage.
Clubs desperate for contact-oriented bats may be willing to overpay, allowing Bloom to flip outfield depth for near-ready pitching or prospects.
Sonny Gray may be the most underrated pitcher in baseball.

Whoever trades for Gray is getting a gift.
The organization still plans to build around Masyn Winn, Victor Scott II, and Jordan Walker, but almost everyone else appears available.
