MLB Trade Rumors: 5 Potential Landing Spots for Kyle Schwarber in Free Agency
Kyle Schwarber has been a reliable source of big-time power since he came to the Philadelphia Phillies four seasons ago, but he stepped it up to unprecedented levels in 2025. Schwarber blasted a career-high 56 homers to lead the National League, and 132 RBIs to lead all of baseball. And he did it all in a contract year.
A free agent this offseason, Schwarber, despite going into his age-33 season next year, is in line for a massive payday in free agency. Projections have him landing a four- or five-year deal worth as much as $40 million a season, for a payday in the range of $150M. That's unheard of money for a DH only, especially one getting close to his mid-30s.
Insider Jon Heyman has suggested Schwarb's top 5 potential landing spots.
Philadelphia Phillies
The incumbents are the prohibitive favorites to retain Schwarber, as they can ill-afford to lose him from their lineup. "They really have no choice," says Heyman. They made him a substantial offer back in spring training, but the slugger wanted to wait for free agency. And he made himself a heckuva lot of extra dough by doing so.
Chicago Cubs
"That was a beautiful marriage," Heyman says of Schwarb's six years with the Cubs to start his career. He posted an .816 OPS in his time in the Windy City, with 121 HR.
Boston Red Sox
Schwarber also spent a short time with the BoSox, when they acquired him from the Washington Nationals at the trade deadline in 2021. He batted .291 with a .957 OPS in his 40 games there. The Red Sox could use another masher for the lineup. But if they put out the big bucks to retain Alex Bregman, will they have the funds left over to break the bank for Schwarber as well?
Toronto Blue Jays
"Big market team, a little extra offense for them," says Heyman. Particularly if they lose Bo Bichette in free agency. However, the DH spot could get kind of crowded next year in Toronto, as George Springer's best position these days is DH, and the same could certainly be said for Anthony Santander.
San Francisco Giants
They are always ready to spend big money, and are in on the biggest fish in the free agent sea each year (though usually come up short). And even with the recent additions of Rafael Devers and Willy Adames, the Giants could use more offense.
All in all, however, Schwarber is such a beloved player in the Phillies clubhouse, it would be a big surprise if they don't find a way to bring him back.
