Brewers Considering Drastic Move After NLCS Elimination
Does this mean that the Brewers might consider spending some money this winter to get over the hump? Uh, don't hold your breath. According to Andy McCullough of The Athletic, they will actually consider trading All-Star pitcher Freddy Peralta.
As the winter unfolds, the Brewers are expected to at least field offers for starting pitcher Freddy Peralta, according to people familiar with the situation who requested anonymity in order to speak freely.
Peralta is a two-time All-Star, and had his best season in the majors this year at the age 29, with a 17-6 record, a 2.70 ERA and a 1.07 WHIP. He had a 204:66 strikeout to walk ratio, his third straight year over the 200-strikeout mark.
But the Brewers are in baseball’s smallest media market, and are consistently in the bottom third of major league teams in payroll. They've had good success in recent years despite all that, including this season's sensational MLB-best 97 wins, but they simply can't spend like the Dodgers, Mets, Yankees and Blue Jays of the world.
Brewers will not be big spenders this winter, as usual
"Owner Mark Attanasio is not expected to endorse significant spending" this winter, writes McCullough.
Granted, Milwaukee has a very affordable $8 million team option on Peralta for 2026, but after that, he's a free agent. The Brewers could try to get out ahead of it.
