MLB Rumors: Top 5 Landing Spots For Alex Bregman This Offseason

Boston Red Sox third baseman Alex Bregman runs the bases during 2025 game.

After a strong 2025 season with the Boston Red Sox, Alex Bregman is expected to opt out of his contract and re-enter free agency.

Bleacher Report’s Tim Kelly ranked eight possible destinations for the star infielder, but five stand out above the rest as realistic landing spots for the 31-year-old.

Boston Red Sox

The Boston Red Sox remain the most logical fit for Bregman, despite his decision to test the market. Manager Alex Cora pushed for his signing last winter, and with Rafael Devers long gone, Boston has no internal replacement ready at third base. The Red Sox are also expected to be aggressive in free agency after their Wild Card exit, making them the frontrunner to keep Bregman in Fenway for the long haul.

Detroit Tigers

The Detroit Tigers pursued Bregman last winter, and their need is even greater now. Jace Jung has yet to seize the hot corner, and the Tigers remain desperate for a proven, playoff-tested veteran. Manager A.J. Hinch coached Bregman in Houston and would welcome his former star to anchor a lineup in need of reliability. With financial flexibility and a young core ready to contend, Detroit could make a serious bid.

Toronto Blue Jays

If the Toronto Blue Jays fail to re-sign Bo Bichette, Alex Bregman could become their next major splash. Signing him would allow Ernie Clement to slide to shortstop while Bregman locks down third. Toronto has shown a willingness to spend in recent years, and the chance to reunite Bregman with former teammate George Springer adds to the appeal.

Chicago Cubs

The Chicago Cubs are another team where Bregman’s fit depends on other free-agent moves. If Kyle Tucker departs, Chicago could pivot toward Bregman as an offensive replacement. While the infield alignment would be tricky with Matt Shaw and Nico Hoerner, president Jed Hoyer may prioritize Bregman’s bat to keep the Cubs in the playoff mix.

Philadelphia Phillies

The Philadelphia Phillies sit at No. 5 on Kelly’s list, mostly due to uncertainty with Kyle Schwarber. If Schwarber re-signs, the Phillies likely pass. But if he walks, Bregman becomes a prime target as both a middle-of-the-order bat and a veteran leader. Dave Dombrowski could then explore flipping Alec Bohm ahead of his contract year, making Bregman a centerpiece addition.
