Top 3 Managers Who Could Be Fired After 2025 Season
Four managers have already bitten the dust this season in the major leagues, but there will undoubtedly be more at the conclusion of the 2025 season.
Brandon Hyde of the Baltimore Orioles, Bud Black of the Colorado Rockies, Derek Shelton of the Pittsburgh Pirates, and Davey Martinez of the Washington Nationals have been given their pink slips, but pulling from a list cobbled together by Bob Nightengale of USA Today, we take a look at the top 3 big-name managers who could be fired after the season:
Aaron Boone, New York Yankees
The Bronx Bombers went on a nice run in the month of August to put themselves in position to really push the Toronto Blue Jays for first place in the American League Eastern Division. They're now just 2.5 games back of the Jays, with a month to go. But if they don't complete the second-half turnaround and make it to the postseason as a serious contender, it could be curtains for Boone.
The Yankees certainly need to make the playoffs for Boone to retain his job. The big question is how deep in the playoffs they need to go for Boone’s job to be secure?
Rocco Baldelli, Minnesota Twins
The Twins had a hugely disappointing season, leading to a massive sell-off at the trade deadline. The team is at risk of finishing with their worst record in the 7-year reign of Baldelli, and it just could be that he's reached his expiry date.
"Do they believe Baldelli is the right man to lead them back through the rebuild?" Nightengale asks.
Bob Melvin, San Francisco Giants
In his 20 years as a Major League manager, Melvin has won three Manager of the Year awards. But in two years with the Giants, he has failed to garner the turnaround to playoff contention that the team had hoped when they hired the highly respected field boss.
This season, the Giants once again will not make it to the postseason, and it's taken a recent 8-2 run to even get them back to the .500 mark. And as Nightengale writes, "When you invest $250 million in acquiring Rafael Devers, you don’t expect to play like one of the worst teams in baseball for months."
