Insider Says Blue Jays 'Have A Problem', And There's No Fix in Sight
Is the Toronto Blue Jays' magical ride this season coming to an end? Insider Ken Rosenthal said on Foul Territory on Tuesday that the Jays obviously have a problem, and there doesn't appear to be a fix.
Yes, it's the Toronto bullpen. Two more games blown in the 9th inning over the weekend, and the Jays' lead atop the AL East is down to just 2.5 games over both the New York Yankees and the Boston Red Sox, heading into play on Tuesday.

"The Jays have a problem here... The bullpen is tired…it’s going to be really interesting to see how the Jays come out of this,” Rosenthal said. “I’m not sure there’s a fix here.”
Allan Mitchell of The Athletic has echoed the same sentiments, but with even more urgency, on The Kevin Karius Show. "Whatever alarm you can sound, you sound it now. The Jays are in trouble".
The latest attempted "fix" is the call-up of lefty Ryan Borucki for a second tour of duty with the club. He was picked up last week after being DFA'd and released by the Pittsburgh Pirates.
But that won't solve the issues that have run rampant in the Jays' bullpen.
Closer Jeff Hoffman now has seven blown saves, two of them plus a loss in the 9th inning of a tie game, all in his last five appearances. Primary lefty Brendon Little is a shell of the pitcher we saw earlier in the season.
One bright spot on the pitching side that should actually be helping the Blue Jays' bullpen (though it quite obviously isn't right now) is that the starting rotation is consistently giving them length. Six or seven innings in most starts. So even though it seems like many of the bullpen arms are tiring, as Rosenthal pointed out, the Jays were 3rd in the majors in August in innings per start from their rotation.
Whether the Jays' relievers can right the ship will most likely determine the outcome of the American League East Division.
