MLB Rumors: Top 3 Free Agent Landing Spots For Pete Alonso

New York Mets first baseman Pete Alonso reacts during 2025 game.

With the New York Mets stumbling out of playoff contention, attention is shifting to the future of Pete Alonso.

The slugging first baseman signed a two-year, $54 million deal last winter with a player option for 2026, but insiders expect him to decline it and test free agency. Alonso, a five-time All-Star, is coming off another strong season, currently hitting .267 with 33 home runs, 113 RBIs, and an .854 OPS.

At 30 years old and still among the game’s elite power bats, Alonso is positioned for a major payday that the Mets may no longer be able to afford.

Phillies and Red Sox in the Mix

The Philadelphia Phillies could be a surprising fit despite Bryce Harper’s presence at first base. If Kyle Schwarber departs, the Phillies could rotate Harper and Alonso between first base and designated hitter, creating one of the league’s most feared middle-of-the-order duos.

Meanwhile, the Boston Red Sox are widely expected to pursue Alonso if they lose Alex Bregman in free agency. Triston Casas’ severe knee injury has left Boston thin at first base, and Alonso’s bat would fit perfectly with their aggressive push to return to contention.

Rangers Eye Alonso After Title Window Moves

The Texas Rangers, fresh off recent World Series success and not shy about spending big, are another prime landing spot. They already lured Jacob deGrom away from the Mets, and reuniting him with Alonso would add another star to a win-now roster.

Current first baseman Jake Burger has provided some power but lacks Alonso’s consistency and long-term appeal.
