MLB Rumors: Huge Update Revealed On Mets & Edwin Diaz
The New York Mets are drawing a line in the sand with Edwin Diaz, even as they overhaul the roster and try to push back into true contender status.
After trading longtime outfielder Brandon Nimmo to the Texas Rangers for Marcus Semien, president of baseball operations David Stearns made it clear that sentiment is not driving decisions in Queens.
That same cold logic now applies to Diaz’s free agency. According to The Athletic’s Will Sammon, the team is balking at the closer’s push for another five year, roughly $100 million contract that mirrors the record deal he signed in 2022.
Diaz contract standoff and Mets’ new approach
Diaz, who turns 32 in March, opted out of the final two years and $38 million of his previous agreement to take one big swing at the open market. He is coming off one of his best seasons, with a 1.63 ERA, a 38 percent strikeout rate and elite ratios over 66.1 innings, so his camp is understandably aiming high.
Multiple reports say he wants essentially the same five year, $102 million structure the Mets gave him last time. New York sees it differently.
Sammon reports that contract length is the major sticking point, with the Mets preferring something closer to a three year pact rather than another long commitment to a reliever who is already into his thirties.

Nimmo was just moved despite being a fan favorite, and insiders do not believe Pete Alonso or Diaz will get special treatment just because of their status in franchise lore.
The front office still wants Diaz back, and he has said he loves New York and would be happy to stay, but he has also put his odds of returning at “fifty fifty.”
With other big spenders like the Toronto Blue Jays at least kicking the tires on Diaz, and the qualifying offer attached, the Mets have to consider multiple factors, like cost, term and draft implications, rather than simply matching the closer’s ask on emotion.
