NY Mets' Pete Alonso Addresses His Free Agency Plans

Pete Alonso, NY Mets, hits a home run

To say that Pete Alonso's free agency didn't go well last winter is an understatement. The New York Mets put the squeeze on the Polar Bear, and left him having to accept a two-year, $54 million deal to return to the team he loves.

But then Alonso watched fellow first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr. sign a $500 million extension with the Toronto Blue Jays, while he has gone out and posted another tremendous power season for the Mets. He will undoubtedly opt out of his $24 million option for 2026 and enter free agency once again. This time, he wants to do it right.

Insiders Jon Heyman and Joel Sherman asked Alonso on their The Show podcast on Friday whether he wants to remain with the Mets after this season.

"We'll see what happens. I love it, it's great, but you can't really predict anything... I haven't really thought about the free agent thing until we are talking about it right now. It'd be great to stay, but whatever happens, happens. I can't get in a crystal ball (laughs). I wish I could, but we'll see."

He's obviously not tipping his hand this time around, as the Mets knew full well Alonso wanted to return last offseason, and they just didn't want to break the bank for him, particularly after a somewhat down season.

At the same time, however, Petey did admit that he loves the team.

"For me, I've grown up in this organization, and it's been really special. There's some great people here... Those people are really, really important to me."

Alonso has blasted 33 home runs this season, with 113 RBIs, with an .854 OPS and a 141 OPS+. His 37 doubles lead the National League.

He says, rightfully, at this point, that he's more focused on getting the team "over the finish line" and into the playoffs. The Mets have been in a tailspin, losers of six straight going into the weekend, and have seen their Wild Card lead trimmed to just one game in the loss column over both the Cincinnati Reds and the San Francisco Giants.
