Former MLB Exec Predicts INSANE Ask for Kyle Schwarber's Contract This Winter

Talk about having yourself a good 'contract year'... Philadelphia Phillies slugger Kyle Schwarber has taken that to new heights this season. A National League-leading 49 homers and a major league best 120 RBIs. His already important role on the team over the previous three seasons has skyrocketed in 2025, as has his projected asking price as a free agent this winter.

Former MLB executive David Samson has predicted an insane ask for Schwarber, considering he'll be entering his age-33 season, and he's strictly a DH with no positional flexibility.

They've got a situation with Kyle Schwarber that's got Phillies fans sweating...

What is it that you think that Kyle Schwarber deserves in this market? What is realistic?...  You can bet that (he) is going to ask for close to $300 million in free agency.

Samson also predicts that Schwarber will ask for at least seven years on an extension, which would take him to the end of his age-39 season.

"Is there a chance that sanity will prevail?" asks Samson.

"There is panic right now that (GM) Dave Dombrowski will look at Schwarber... and say, 'I just cannot in good conscience say you're a $30 million a year player through your age-37 season.'...

But insider Jeff Passan disagrees with that narrative. In addition to the monster power stats that Schwarber puts up, his off-the-field benefits are just as hefty to the Phillies.

"Schwarber is regarded as the stickiest of glue guys, a font of knowledge whose interpersonal acuity makes him invaluable in a clubhouse," writes Passan."Because of all he brings, Schwarber is going to get paid. Like, paid paid... The salary...should be at least $30 million a year."

In the end, Samson says he cannot see Dombrowski breaking up his powerhouse team, and that he'll "feel the pressure to keep the band together." Samson ultimately predicts that Schwarber will re-sign with the Phillies, but that his total contract value will be well below the $300 million mark.
