Cleveland Guardians Lose All-Star For Season After Scary Scene

Cleveland Guardians designated hitter David Fry reacts after being hit in the face with a ball during 2025 game.

A terrifying scene unfolded at Progressive Field on Tuesday when Cleveland Guardians designated hitter David Fry was struck in the face by a 99 mph fastball from Detroit Tigers ace Tarik Skubal

Fry immediately collapsed in the batter’s box, clutching his bloodied face, while Skubal tossed his glove aside in shock.

Medical staff and manager Stephen Vogt quickly rushed to Fry, who remained conscious and eventually gave a thumbs-up as he was carted off the field.

The Guardians later confirmed Fry sustained multiple minimally displaced facial and nasal fractures, but fortunately, he won’t require surgery. He was discharged from the Cleveland Clinic on Wednesday and is expected to make a full recovery in six to eight weeks

Cleveland placed him on the 10-day injured list and recalled outfielder Johnathan Rodríguez from Triple-A Columbus.

In an unusual display of sportsmanship, Skubal, visibly shaken by the incident, accompanied Vogt to the hospital after the game to personally apologize and check in on Fry. “This is bigger than baseball,” Vogt said.

Skubal added that Fry later texted him thanks.

The Guardians rallied after the incident, scoring three runs in the sixth inning without an outfield hit and securing a 5–2 win. The victory pulled Cleveland even with Detroit atop the AL Central, erasing what was once a 15.5-game deficit in July.
