New York Mets DFA 6-Year Veteran Pitcher

New York Mets pitcher Richard Lovelady pitches during 2025 game.

The New York Mets made another late-season bullpen move on Thursday, designating left-handed reliever Richard Lovelady for assignment and recalling right-hander Kevin Herget from Triple-A Syracuse.

Lovelady, 30, has been on and off the Mets’ roster throughout the year, with this marking the third time he’s been DFA’d by the team in 2025.

After signing with New York in June, the lefty has pitched to an 8.49 ERA across 10 games, including his first two outings with the Toronto Blue Jays before being claimed by the Mets. He most recently threw two innings in Wednesday’s loss to the Chicago Cubs, allowing two runs (one earned) on 31 pitches.

Despite solid results in Triple-A, where he logged a 1.66 ERA with a 26.3% strikeout rate, Lovelady’s inconsistency in the majors has kept him in constant roster flux.

Herget, 34, returns to the Mets for yet another stint after spending much of the year bouncing between the big-league roster and Syracuse. In five MLB appearances this season, Herget owns a 3.27 ERA with five strikeouts over 11 innings.

His most recent outing came on September 6 against the Cincinnati Reds, when he delivered 1.2 scoreless frames. With the Mets chasing a postseason berth, Herget provides manager Carlos Mendoza with another fresh arm as the club manages its taxed bullpen.

Meanwhile, veteran right-hander Chris Devenski was outrighted to Triple-A after previously being DFA’d. Devenski has put up a strong 2.16 ERA across 16.2 innings this season but has been caught in the roster shuffle as the Mets cycle through relievers to cover innings down the stretch.
