NY Mets Starter Likely to Undergo Tommy John Surgery

It's safe to say that most New York Mets fans won't exactly be heartbroken by the news, but it's a rough update nevertheless for veteran right-handed starting pitcher Frankie Montas. He's been placed on the IL with an ulnar collateral ligament injury in his throwing elbow. And you know what that usually means...

Rarely do we hear of a pitcher going down with a UCL injury and not eventually needing Tommy John surgery, and this seems to be the path this could be taking for the 32-year-old Montas.

Manager Carlos Mendoza says that the injury is "pretty significant," and Tommy John Surgery is possible. Either way, Montas is done for the season. He'll have a series of doctors do further examinations.

Again, needless to say, after watching Montas sign a two-year, $34 million contract in the offseason and then pitch to a 6.28 ERA and 1.60 WHIP in his nine appearances, Mets fans are not overly distraught about the news.

As some fans have noted, having the newly minted sensation Nolan McLean in the rotation in Montas's place is a blessing in disgu—well, it's not really in disguise, it's just right out there in the open.

McLean has pitched to a 1.46 ERA in winning his first two starts. The memory of Montas will quickly be in Mets' fans rear-view mirrors.
