New York Mets Sign Familiar Name; DFA Catcher

Toronto Blue Jays catcher Ali Sanchez hits the ball during 2025 game.

The New York Mets have signed catcher Ali Sanchez to a minor league contract.

The move bolsters the organization’s catching depth after starter Francisco Alvarez was placed on the injured list with a torn UCL in his thumb, an injury that will eventually require surgery. Alvarez has been hitting .323/.408/.645 in 21 games since returning from Triple-A Syracuse and hopes to play through the injury before needing surgery.

Mets Reunite with Ali Sanchez for Catching Depth

Sanchez, 28, began his career with the Mets as an international free agent from Venezuela in 2013. He made his MLB debut in 2020, going 1-for-9 across five games. After being designated for assignment by New York in 2021, Sanchez spent time in the minor leagues with several organizations including the St. Louis Cardinals, Detroit Tigers, Arizona Diamondbacks, Chicago Cubs, and Miami Marlins.

This season, he appeared in nine MLB games, splitting time between the Toronto Blue Jays and Boston Red Sox, collecting five hits in 22 at-bats (.227) with two doubles.

While with Toronto’s Triple-A Buffalo affiliate, Sanchez had a strong season, hitting .279/.347/.419 with a .766 OPS, 13 extra-base hits, and 28 RBIs in 54 games. After being claimed off waivers by the Red Sox in August, he was designated for assignment just 10 days later and elected free agency.

In a corresponding move, the Mets have designated catcher Jose Herrera for assignment.
