Rockies Release Starting Pitcher Part Of Nolan Arenado Trade In 2021
The Colorado Rockies have unconditionally released left-handed pitcher Austin Gomber, ending his five-season stint with the team.
The 31-year-old southpaw struggled through a winless 2025 season, posting a career-high 7.49 ERA and 1.72 WHIP in 12 starts while striking out just 34 batters over 57.2 innings. Gomber’s final appearance came against the Los Angeles Dodgers, where he surrendered seven earned runs on nine hits in just three innings.
I’d like to say that Austin Gomber is a class act. Always talked honestly with the media, held himself accountable, and was always friendly to me even when things were rough. Total pro. Rockies https://t.co/WuU2BoGCeR

Gomber’s Rocky Path Since the Arenado Trade
Gomber was acquired from the St. Louis Cardinals in the 2021 trade that sent Nolan Arenado to St. Louis. He was one of five players the Rockies received, and the only one with major league experience at the time.
Over his Colorado tenure, Gomber went 28-44 with a 5.31 ERA, with injuries and inconsistency limiting his impact. Alongside Gomber, none of the other Arenado trade pieces (Elehuris Montero, Mateo Gil, Tony Locey, and Jake Sommers) remain with the Rockies.

They have also made the following moves:
- Called up LHP Lucas Gilbreath
- Recalled RHP Angel Chivilli from Triple-A
- Placed RHP Dugan Darnell on the 15-day injured list with left hip inflammation. pic.twitter.com/8H5ys5xECx
Free Agency Awaits for Gomber
Gomber’s release marks the start of free agency for the veteran lefty, who could see improved results if he pitches closer to sea level, away from Coors Field’s hitter-friendly conditions. Despite a challenging 2025, teams in need of rotation depth may take a chance on the Florida Atlantic product, who brings experience as both a starter and reliever.
Meanwhile, the Rockies have made additional roster moves, including recalling right-handed reliever Angel Chivilli and selecting lefty Lucas Gilbreath’s contract from Triple-A Albuquerque, while placing Dugan Darnell on the 15-day injured list.
