Cardinals Claim Flamethrower Pitcher Off Waivers From Red Sox

The St. Louis Cardinals have claimed right-handed reliever Jorge Alcala off waivers from the Boston Red Sox.

Alcala, 30, will join the active roster immediately, as he’s out of minor league options. Bringing a fastball that can reach triple digits, Alcala has struggled this season, posting a 6.64 ERA with 46 strikeouts and 23 walks over 40.2 innings split between the Minnesota Twins and Boston.

Fresh Opportunity After Rough Season

Alcala broke into the majors with Minnesota in 2019 and carried a solid track record through 2024, recording a 3.64 ERA across 163.1 innings for the Twins. However, his control issues have been pronounced in 2025, with a 12.1% walk rate derailing his effectiveness.

The Cardinals, who recently traded three of their top relievers at the deadline, see Alcala as a low-cost, high-upside arm who could be retained for 2026 via arbitration if he performs well down the stretch.

Cardinals Reshaping Their Bullpen

This is St. Louis’ second bullpen addition since the trade deadline, following the claim of lefty Anthony Veneziano from the Miami Marlins. With Ryan Helsley, Phil Maton, and Steven Matz all dealt before the deadline, the Cardinals are retooling their relief corps while still sitting just 5.5 games out of a playoff spot. Alcala’s raw stuff gives him a chance to stick if the coaching staff can help him harness his command.
