MLB Trade Rumors: Yankees Eyeing Rockies Pitcher At Deadline

Colorado Rockies pitcher Jake Bird pitches during 2025 game.

The New York Yankees continue to prioritize bullpen help as the MLB trade deadline approaches, and Colorado Rockies right-hander Jake Bird is now on their radar.

Brendan Kuty of The Athletic reported that the Yankees have expressed interest in the 29-year-old, who impressed players during a series against New York in late May.

Bird Brings Swing-and-Miss Ability and Team Control

Bird has logged 44 appearances this season, pitching 53.1 innings with a 4.05 ERA and an impressive 10.5 strikeouts per nine innings. While his recent outings have been rocky, giving up 11 runs over his last seven appearances, his 3.09 FIP and strong underlying metrics suggest he’s a prime candidate to rebound in a more favorable environment.

Bird is also under team control through 2028, making him an attractive long-term bullpen piece for any acquiring team.

Yankees Weigh Deadline Aggression

The Yankees bullpen has been one of the league’s weakest units in recent weeks, ranking near the bottom of MLB in ERA since early July. Injuries to Mark Leiter Jr. and Fernando Cruz have further depleted the group, leaving manager Aaron Boone with limited options.

While the Yankees have already added Ryan McMahon and Amed Rosario in separate trades, their focus now appears to be squarely on shoring up the bullpen. Bird’s affordability (he earns just $770,000 this season) and potential upside could make him a realistic target if the Rockies are willing to part with him.
