MLB Rumors: Red Sox Linked To Trade For Former Batting Champion On AL East Team

Boston Red Sox manager Alex Cora walks off the field during 2025 game.

The Boston Red Sox could make a major splash before the trade deadline by targeting Tampa Bay Rays first baseman Yandy Diaz.

ESPN’s Buster Olney reported that Diaz would be an “absolutely perfect fit” for Boston, who has struggled to fill the void left by Triston Casas’ season-ending injury. Diaz, 34, is signed through 2026 with a club option for 2027 and is owed $10 million this season, making him a controllable and affordable option for contenders.

Diaz Fills Multiple Needs for Boston

Diaz is having another strong season, hitting .286 with 18 home runs, 61 RBIs, and a 128 OPS+. He would instantly upgrade Boston’s offense and defense at first base while also offering the ability to play third base if needed.

The former batting champion has been one of Tampa Bay’s most reliable hitters since 2022, and his power and on-base skills would give the Red Sox a legitimate middle-of-the-order threat.

Division Rival Deal Won’t Come Cheap

Trading within the division could complicate negotiations. Tampa Bay has historically been open to dealing with AL East rivals, but Diaz’s talent and team control will likely drive up the price. Speculation suggests the Rays could seek a package centered around young outfielder Jarren Duran and a top prospect.

With Boston firmly in the playoff hunt for the first time since 2021, the front office may be willing to meet a steep asking price to land a bat of Diaz’s caliber.
