MLB Trade Rumors: Padres Would Acquire Alcantara in Proposed Deal
Sandy Alcantara went on a great run for four straight starts in June, before getting knocked around in his most recent outing. But at least he's shown signs of potentially returning to something resembling his former Cy Young self, before his Tommy John surgery.
And with that, the Miami Marlins ace is once again a top trade candidate as we get closer to the deadline at the end of the month.
One potential trade, proposed by former MLB GM and now insider for The Athletic, Jim Bowden, would see the San Diego Padres fortify their rotation by dealing for Alcantara. The hypothetical swap would look like this:
San Diego Padres receive:
- Sandy Alcantara, P
Miami Marlins receive:
- SS Leo De Vries (Padres #1 prospect)
- C Ethan Salas (#2)
- RHP Humberto Cruz (#4)
- RHP Braden Nett (#9)
De Vries and Salas are the top two prospects in the Padres' organization, both teenagers, and a couple of years away from the majors at least.
But as Bowden notes, "To acquire three postseasons of club control with Alcantara’s contract, the Padres might be willing to give up their top two prospects."
It's a huge haul for sure, but as Bowden notes, Friars' GM AJ Preller isn't one to shy away from such moves. He sent the Washington Nationals a huge part of their future (which has now arrived in the present) in the trade to get Juan Soto back in 2022. It's taken San Diego some time to rebuild the prospect pool, but according to Bowden, Preller should tear it down again for Alcantara.
The problem the Padres face is that their current top two starters, Dylan Cease and Michael King, will both be eligible for free agency after this season, so getting Alcantara would be a nice insurance policy.
