MLB Trade Rumors: Jacob deGrom's Trade Candidacy Revealed
With the Texas Rangers teetering on the borderline of Wild Card contention, currently 3.5 games back, it's unclear whether they'll decide to be sellers at the trade deadline in two weeks. But if they do go that route, they could dangle the best pitching trade candidate in all of baseball in Jacob deGrom.
The two-time Cy Young winner and five-time All-Star is finally back to form after four straight years ravaged by injury. In 19 starts, he's 9-2 with a 2.32 ERA, a 0.90 WHIP and a 113:24 strikeout to walk ratio in 112 innings. If Tarik Skubal wasn't a thing, deGrom could be in line for his 3rd Cy Young.
With two more years plus a club option remaining on his deal, for a total of $95 million, would the Rangers consider selling high (about as high as it gets) on the 37-year-old?
According to insider Buster Olney, appearing on TSN's First Up on Wednesday, don't count on it.
I asked two general managers in the last couple of days (whether deGrom would be available on the trade market), and they both said 'no'... Now would be a time when you would get great value for deGrom were you to deal him, but the feeling is that deGrom and (co-ace Nate) Eovaldi would not be available.
Eovaldi also has two years left on his deal, totaling $54 million.
Followers of the NY Mets, as well as the Yankees, Boston Red Sox and Toronto Blue Jays have been pleading for their teams to try to pry deGrom loose from the Lone Star State, but it doesn't seem like it'll happen.
Instead, they'll all have to focus one of the many other starting pitchers who should be available for trade.
