MLB Trade Rumors: Guardians & Red Sox Looking Like Trade Partners at Deadline
The trade deadline is now just three+ weeks away, and we're starting to get a better idea of buyers and sellers. The Cleveland Guardians, who came into the season with hopes of contending for the AL Central division title, suffered another humiliating loss on Sunday, extending their losing streak to 10 games.
Nursing a 1-0 lead in the 9th inning with two outs, they not only blew the lead, but then gave up six runs in the 10th lose 7-2 to the Detroit Tigers. The Guards are now 6-23 over their last 29 games, their offense is in a season-long tailspin, and they've scored the fewest runs in baseball over the past month.
Anyone on the Guardians not named Jose Ramirez or Steven Kwan is hitting a combined .203 with a .615 OPS, per insider Bob Nightengale.
In USA Today, he suggests that when Cleveland finally admits to going the 'sell' route (and if Sunday didn't convince them, nothing will), they've got a veteran first baseman who the Boston Red Sox might be interested in.
The Cleveland Guardians are expected to unload first baseman Carlos Santana by the end of the month, who could be a nice fit for the Boston Red Sox.
The BoSox, of course, have been unsettled at first base since Triston Casas was lost for the season back in early May to an ugly-looking knee injury.
They currently have Abraham Toro getting most of the starts there.
Cleveland would have no reason to hang onto Santana, who is having a relatively strong year at the age of 39, having launched 10 homers and driven in 38.
He probably wouldn't top the Red Sox' wish list among potential trade candidates at first, as Arizona's Josh Naylor would undoubtedly be the big prize, should they decide to sell.
But Santana would be a nice veteran, stabilizing presence for Boston, who are currently 2.5 games back of a Wild Card spot, as the top team in the list of several chasing a postseason spot.
