MLB Rumors: Mets Talking Trade For Two Big-Name Players

Chicago White Sox outfielder Luis Robert Jr. hits the ball during 2025 game.

The New York Mets are positioning themselves as one of the most aggressive buyers ahead of the July 31 MLB trade deadline.

After acquiring reliever Gregory Soto from the Baltimore Orioles, reports indicate the Mets are exploring blockbuster moves for two marquee names: Miami Marlins ace Sandy Alcantara and Chicago White Sox outfielder Luis Robert Jr.

According to Mike Puma of the New York Post, New York recently checked in on Alcantara. However, the asking price for the 2022 NL Cy Young Award winner is steep, and intra-division trades of controllable players are notoriously difficult.

Alcantara has struggled this year with a 6.66 ERA across 20 starts, but his velocity and peripherals hint at a potential rebound. He’s under contract for $17.3 million in both 2025 and 2026, with a $21 million club option for 2027, making him an appealing target if the Mets can strike the right deal.

The Mets are also in the market for a true center fielder, and New York Post insider Jon Heyman reports they’ve joined several teams in pursuing Luis Robert Jr.. Despite a slow start, Robert has heated up in July with a .351/.442/.541 line over his last 11 games and remains a dynamic defender with 10 home runs and 26 stolen bases on the season.

Robert is under team control with $20 million club options for 2026 and 2027, making him a long-term asset. The White Sox’s asking price will be significant, but the Mets’ need for a reliable center fielder could push them to get creative. Jeff McNeil and Tyrone Taylor have split time in center, but team president David Stearns admitted the bar to improve the position has “risen over the last two weeks.”
