MLB Trade Rumors: Mets Shopping Infielders To Boost Another Area Of Need

New York Mets infielder Brett Baty runs the bases during 2025 game.

The New York Mets are preparing for a trade deadline shakeup, with the team now open to dealing from its surplus of young infielders.

According to The Athletic's Will Sammon, the Mets have made Brett Baty, Mark Vientos, Ronny Mauricio, and Luisangel Acuña available in trade talks. With Jeff McNeil, Francisco Lindor, and Pete Alonso locked into everyday roles, the Mets simply don’t have enough at-bats to go around, and they’re hoping to flip this positional depth into much-needed bullpen help.

Mets Ready to Trade Infielders to Address Bullpen Needs

While Baty may hold the most current value, Vientos, Mauricio, and Acuña have all drawn interest despite inconsistent performances. Vientos, last season’s breakout slugger, has struggled in 2025 and is viewed more as a DH than a reliable third baseman. Mauricio’s raw tools remain appealing, but he’s been erratic at the plate post-ACL recovery. Acuña has flashed defensive versatility, but his bat hasn’t developed as hoped. The Mets are prioritizing relievers with team control, targeting names like David Bednar, Mason Miller, and Jhoan Duran, though the cost to acquire such arms is high.

The Mets are unlikely to add another starter unless it’s a true playoff ace, and their bullpen remains the top focus. If they can’t land a reliever via trade, top prospects like Blade Tidwell and Brandon Sproat could be fast-tracked into shorter MLB roles. But with a tight NL East race against the Philadelphia Phillies, the pressure is on GM David Stearns to turn one of these young infielders into immediate value without mortgaging the future.
