MLB Rumors: Dodgers Could Trade Starting Pitcher For Bullpen Help

With the MLB trade deadline fast approaching, the Los Angeles Dodgers are seriously considering moving right-hander Dustin May to improve their struggling bullpen.

According to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic, May is viewed internally as a potential trade chip, especially with lefty Blake Snell nearing his return and Shohei Ohtani ramping up his innings. May’s 99 innings are second-most on the team, but his expiring contract and recent inconsistency make him expendable in the right deal.

May's Mixed Results in Platform Year

May has started 17 games this season (18 total appearances), posting a 6-6 record with a 4.73 ERA, 1.36 WHIP, and 92 strikeouts. Though he opened strong, he's struggled since early June, with a 5.79 ERA over his last 37.1 innings.

Still, he's remained healthy and his velocity has held, offering value to teams in need of rotation help. The Dodgers have used him in long relief, most recently behind Ohtani, and while that may hint at a reduced role, it's also a sign they're managing his workload post-injury.

Trade Value vs. Internal Depth

The Dodgers don’t need to move May, but doing so could help them land a high-leverage reliever without giving up top prospects like Dalton Rushing or Alex Freeland. LA’s rotation is set to include Yamamoto, Kershaw, Glasnow, Ohtani, Sheehan, and soon Snell, with depth in Roki Sasaki and several Triple-A arms.

Trading May to a pitching-hungry contender could return a solid bullpen piece or prospects. However, his value is limited as a rental with middling numbers, which may lead the Dodgers to keep him as bullpen insurance heading into October.
