BREAKING: Diamondbacks Trade Josh Naylor To AL Contender

The Seattle Mariners have made their first major move ahead of the 2025 MLB trade deadline, acquiring first baseman Josh Naylor from the Arizona Diamondbacks

In exchange, Seattle sent left-hander Brandyn Garcia and right-hander Ashton Izzi, two top-20 prospects in their farm system, to Arizona. Naylor, a proven slugger and 2024 All-Star, adds left-handed power and playoff-tested experience to Seattle’s lineup.

A Key Addition for Seattle's Playoff Push

Naylor, 28, is slashing .292/.360/.447 with 11 home runs, 59 RBIs, and a career-high 11 stolen bases across 93 games this season. He’ll take over at first base, replacing a position that has produced just 16 homers and 0.4 fWAR for Seattle in 2025.

Naylor was already on Seattle's radar this past offseason before landing in Arizona. With the Mariners sitting second in the AL West and holding a Wild Card spot, his arrival shows a serious commitment to contending.

Diamondbacks Shift Toward the Future

Arizona, now 50-53 and fading in the NL Wild Card race, is pivoting toward selling expiring assets. Naylor was acquired just months ago from Cleveland in a win-now move, but injuries and inconsistency have reshaped their deadline strategy. In return, they get Brandyn Garcia, who recently made his MLB debut, and Ashton Izzi, a 21-year-old righty with high-upside tools.

What’s Next for Seattle?

While Naylor fills a major need, reports suggest the Mariners are still pursuing a reunion with third baseman Eugenio Suárez to upgrade over Ben Williamson. Whether that materializes or not, Seattle’s offense is trending up, and the addition of Naylor could prove pivotal in a tightly contested playoff race.
