MLB Trade Rumors: Cardinals Shopping Three Pitchers
The St. Louis Cardinals are quickly becoming one of the most active teams in the rumor mill as the trade deadline approaches.
Multiple reports indicate the club is fielding offers for closer Ryan Helsley, setup man Phil Maton, and lefty Steven Matz as they pivot toward 2026. Helsley, who earned 49 saves and an All-Star nod last season, is drawing the most interest.
The 31-year-old closer admitted there’s a “90% chance” he’s traded, with contenders like the Los Angeles Dodgers, Philadelphia Phillies, and Toronto Blue Jays among the suitors. Helsley’s electric fastball and ninth-inning experience make him one of the most coveted bullpen arms available.
In case any contenders want to add a closer at the deadline...

Cardinals Trade Rumors: Helsley Drawing Strong Interest
Phil Maton is also seeing his market heat up thanks to a breakout year with the Cardinals. The veteran right-hander owns a 2.55 ERA with elite strikeout numbers and ranks near the top of MLB in limiting hard contact. His affordable contract and ability to handle late-inning situations have caught the attention of clubs like the New York Yankees, who are seeking bullpen depth.
Left-hander Steven Matz has emerged as a versatile option for teams in need of pitching help. The 34-year-old has a 3.35 ERA this season while working as both a starter and reliever, and his flexibility could make him a sneaky deadline addition.
I always wanted to see Steven Matz start in the rotation and thought he was a great signing. But now I think if he's still on the team after the deadline, it's a failure. Same goes for Maton. Love what he's done but they gotta get something#STLCards#ForTheLou

St. Louis isn’t expected to conduct a full teardown, but moving impending free agents is clearly on the table. Helsley, Maton, and Matz all fit the bill as players who can bring back useful prospect returns, and rival executives believe at least one of them will be wearing a different uniform by August 1.
With the Cardinals slipping in the standings, their bullpen arms are now among the most talked-about trade targets in baseball.
