Sandy Alcantara's Trade Chances Soaring; 8 Teams Linked to Marlins Ace

Sandy Alcantara has 8 teams listed as suitors on trade market

Former Cy Young winner Sandy Alcantara came into the 2025 season as a top trade candidate for the Miami Marlins. But a brutal start to the year put a bit of a damper on that talk, as he had an 8.47 ERA through his first 11 starts to the end of May.

But a 2.74 ERA over his first four June starts has rekindled the talk, and now, according to insider Jeff Passan, Alcantara has a 60% chance of getting traded, trailing only Ryan O'Hearn's odds of a trade among Passan's Top 10 trade candidates.

In fact, the ESPN insider now lists no less than eight teams to watch as a fit for the Marlins' ace.

  • Chicago Cubs
  • Houston Astros
  • Boston Red Sox
  • Toronto Blue Jays
  • Arizona Diamondbacks
  • Los Angeles Dodgers
  • San Diego Padres
  • Baltimore Orioles

The Cubs are still looking for another ace after losing Justin Steele for the year; the Astros rotation has been ravaged, with three pitchers currently recovering from Tommy John surgery; the Red Sox would love to create a 1-2 punch at the top of their staff with Garrett Crochet; the Orioles still haven't replaced ace Corbin Burnes, who left in free agency last winter; the Dodgers are always looking for any top pitcher that comes on the market; and no one knows what the Blue Jays are thinking, but heck, they always seem to throw their hat in the ring for big names.

Alcantara was a unanimous winner of the Cy Young award in 2022, but missed all of 2024 following Tommy John surgery. He's slowly coming around.

But Passan also suggests that it's possible that the Fish could hold on to him until the winter, "when teams like Baltimore would be more inclined to acquire him and the final two years of his contract."

He has $17.3 million owing on this season and next, followed by a club option at $21 million for 2027.

(Note: Alcantara's impressive June run took a beating on Saturday, as he gave up seven earned runs on 10 hits in six innings to the Arizona Diamondbacks. He did not, however, give up a walk. Whether this start has any impact on teams' interest remains to be seen, and we'll likely know more about that in his next couple of starts).
