MLB Rumors: Phillies & Red Sox Linked To Blockbuster Trade

Philadelphia Phillies manager Rob Thomson reacts during 2025 game.

The Philadelphia Phillies are buyers this season—and aggressively so.

Sitting in contention behind stars like Bryce Harper and Zack Wheeler, they’re hunting for bullpen arms and a center fielder to round out a World Series-caliber roster. According to Bob Nightengale, the Phillies are among the most active teams ahead of the deadline, and the Boston Red Sox might be their perfect match. If Boston shifts into seller mode, a multi-player trade involving Jarren Duran and Aroldis Chapman could be on the table.

Duran, still under team control through 2028, would be a long-term fix for Philadelphia’s outfield. He’s slashing .274/.323/.423 with elite speed and defense, making him an instant upgrade over Brandon Marsh.

Meanwhile, Chapman has rediscovered his elite form as Boston’s closer, boasting an ERA under 2.00 and still throwing 100 mph heat. If the Red Sox are ready to promote top prospect Roman Anthony, Duran could be the odd man out—and Philly has the prospect capital to make it happen.

But a deal this big won’t come cheap. Rumors suggest Boston would want Andrew Painter or Mick Abel as the headliner, plus additional high-value prospects.

That’s a steep price, but Duran isn’t a rental—he’s a potential centerpiece. If the Red Sox embrace a soft reset and the Phillies go all-in on 2025, this rare win-win trade could reshape both teams for years to come.
