MLB Trade Rumors: 2 Impact Bats for Mariners at Trade Deadline
The Seattle Mariners are pretty much in the middle of the pack when it comes to team offense this season. Yes, that's better than expected after their lack of activity to add any impact bats in the offseason. But with the team in the fight for both first place in the AL West, and a Wild Card spot, they'll need to juice up the offense if they hope to keep pace.
Insider Jeff Passan has suggested two notable bats that could be available at the trade deadline that the M's should be targeting:
Ryan O'Hearn, 1B/OF, Baltimore Orioles
Yes, the Orioles have been playing better of late, but there's still a huge gap between them and the final Wild Card spot in the American League, and six teams to climb over as well. And with a pitching staff that's just not contention-ready, it's more than likely that they'll be sellers.
O'Hearn, a 31-year-old veteran, is having a career year, batting .316 with an .897 OPS and a terrific .158 OPS+. His production has tailed off a bit of late, but as Passan notes, "O'Hearn is an excellent fit for a team that has gotten sub-replacement production from Rowdy Tellez and Donovan Solano at first (base)."
Josh Naylor, 1B, Arizona Diamondbacks
For the same reasons, Naylor would be another tremendous addition for the Mariners. Naylor, in his first year in Arizona, has sacrificed a bit of power to get his average back up this season, as he's hitting .283 with seven long balls. But just last season, with the Cleveland Guardians, he had an All-Star year, blasting 31 homers with 108 RBIs, both career highs.
The Mariners are 26th in OPS out of their first base position this season, and 28th in average. Unlike the offseason, they need to make a move at the trade deadline, as they can't waste the efforts of their superb starting rotation, and a potential playoff spot awaits.
