Mets & Phillies Could Get Into Bidding War Over The Same Upgrade

The Philadelphia Phillies and New York Mets are preparing for a showdown that could define the National League East.

According to The Athletic’s Jim Bowden, both teams are targeting the same high-leverage bullpen arms ahead of the MLB trade deadline. With the Mets holding an increasing lead in the division (4.5 games), the race to secure dominant late-inning relievers could tilt the balance in a playoff push.

Phillies’ Bullpen Struggles Make Help a Must

The Phillies' bullpen woes are no secret. With a 4.56 ERA (24th in MLB) and a league-high 14 blown saves, Philadelphia’s relief corps has been a liability.

Closer Jordan Romano has struggled mightily, posting a 7.40 ERA, while key arms like José Alvarado are sidelined due to suspension. While some relievers like Orion Kerkering and Tanner Banks have shown flashes, the Phillies lack a consistent, shutdown presence, and rival New York knows it.

Mets Also in the Market — and That Spells Trouble

The Mets, meanwhile, boast one of the league’s best bullpen ERAs but are still seeking reinforcements, especially a reliable lefty and a depth arm.

Their involvement complicates matters for the Phillies, who may have to overpay to land top names like Ryan Helsley, Pete Fairbanks, or Felix Bautista. Both teams have playoff-caliber rosters and deep farm systems, setting up a potential bidding war for bullpen upgrades that could ripple throughout the NL East.
