Cincinnati Reds & Athletics Complete Trade

Cincinnati Reds catcher Austin Wynns hits the ball during 2025 game.

The Athletics have acquired catcher Austin Wynns from the Cincinnati Reds in exchange for cash considerations.

The move comes as the Athletics looks to fill a sudden gap behind the plate, with starting catcher Shea Langeliers sidelined due to an oblique strain. To make room on the 40-man roster, the A’s designated right-handed pitcher Carlos Duran for assignment.

Athletics Add Austin Wynns as Catching Depth Amid Injuries

Wynns, 34, was recently DFA’d by the Reds after Tyler Stephenson returned from the injured list, crowding Cincinnati’s catching corps.

Despite limited playing time, Wynns was red-hot in his short stint, slashing .400/.442/.700 with three home runs and 11 RBIs in just 18 games. His stellar performance made him a desirable option for a team like Oakland, which currently features inexperienced options in Willie MacIver and Jhonny Pereda.

A veteran of seven MLB seasons, Wynns has suited up for five teams and now joins his sixth in the Athletics. With over 250 games of big-league experience, he offers immediate defensive stability and a bit of offensive upside, even if his recent numbers are unlikely to sustain.

Still, for a team dealing with injuries and light on catching depth, Wynns arrives as a timely and experienced reinforcement.
