MLB Rumors: Blue Jays & Tigers Linked To Big Trade

Toronto Blue Jays pitcher Jeff Hoffman celebrates after win in 2025 game.

The Toronto Blue Jays are teetering on the edge of playoff contention, and with the trade deadline approaching, they may shift from buyers to sellers—and one name already generating buzz is closer Jeff Hoffman.

According to multiple reports, the Detroit Tigers have emerged as a potential trade partner, looking to bolster their bullpen with a high-leverage arm like Hoffman.

Tigers Linked to Blue Jays’ Jeff Hoffman in Trade Deadline Buzz

Hoffman, signed by Toronto this offseason on a three-year, $33 million deal, has been one of the few bright spots for the 20-20 Jays. Through 19 innings, the former Philadephia Phillies reliever has recorded nine saves with a 3.79 ERA, a strong 2.48 FIP, and a WHIP under 1.00. As Zachary Howell of Clutch Points noted, “His 3-1 record isn’t too bad either… The Tigers’ bullpen has great numbers at this point in the year, but the team lacks an elite closer.”

Detroit’s interest makes sense: they’re in the thick of the AL race with a top-ranked farm system that could afford to part with mid-level prospects for bullpen help. Toronto, meanwhile, is caught in a tight AL East—where less than 10 games separate first and last—and could decide to cash in on Hoffman’s value if they slip further in the standings. With names like Jackson Jobe, Max Clark, and Bryce Rainer headlining Detroit’s minor league talent pool, the framework for a deal exists—if Toronto decides to retool rather than reinforce.
