Texas Rangers DFA 2x Gold Glover
The Texas Rangers have designated two-time Gold Glove shortstop Nick Ahmed for assignment, part of a wider roster shuffle as the team looks for a spark during a sluggish start to the 2025 season.
Ahmed was removed from the 40-man roster to clear space for first baseman Blaine Crim, who was officially called up Friday. “We’re committed to winning,” said president of baseball operations Chris Young. “The players that are performing are going to get playing time.”
Rangers DFA Gold Glover Nick Ahmed Amid Lineup Shake-Up
Ahmed, who was brought in as infield insurance while Corey Seager recovered from injury, went hitless in 10 plate appearances this year. With Seager expected back as early as Sunday and Jonathan Ornelas recalled from Triple-A to serve as a temporary bench infielder, there simply wasn’t room for the veteran glove man.
The Rangers will hope Ahmed accepts an outright assignment to Round Rock if he clears waivers, but his elite defensive pedigree may catch the eye of other teams in need of depth.
Rangers transactions for Friday:
— Texas Rangers PR (@TXRangersPR) May 2, 2025
-INF Blaine Crim contract selected from Round Rock (AAA).
-INF Jonathan Ornelas recalled from Round Rock (AAA).
-INF Jake Burger optioned to Round Rock (AAA).
-INF Nick Ahmed designated for assignment.
This move is part of an attempt to jolt a Rangers team that has dropped eight of its last ten games. Slumping slugger Jake Burger was also sent down to Triple-A, and Crim, a 27-year-old making his big-league debut, was thrust into the first base mix.
The Rangers are dead last in the AL in runs scored and now under .500 at 16-17. “There’s no hidden message with these moves,” Young added. “We’re just not at the level we need to be.”
