Mariners Claim Speedy Former Top Prospect Off Waivers From Rangers
Taveras, 26, was once among the top international prospects in baseball and played a key role in the Rangers’ 2023 World Series title run. With the Mariners dealing with a lot of injuries to outfielders Luke Raley and Victor Robles, the timing of this move couldn't be better.
Taveras Brings Defense, Speed, and Postseason Pedigree
Taveras never quite blossomed into the star many projected during his rise through the Rangers’ system, but his tools remain intriguing. A switch-hitter with elite speed and strong defensive instincts, Taveras ranked among the league’s best in outs above average and arm strength from 2022-24. Despite a quiet 2025 campaign so far—batting just .241 with a .601 OPS—he offers valuable insurance in all three outfield spots, though he’s expected to play primarily on the corners with Julio Rodríguez locked into center.

Seattle play-by-play voice Aaron Goldsmith called the move “great news,” citing Taveras’ pedigree and ability to contribute in multiple ways. The Dominican native is under team control through 2027, giving the Mariners long-term flexibility if he finds a rhythm at the plate.
A Perfect Fit Amid Seattle’s Injury Crunch
Taveras’ arrival comes as the Mariners' outfield depth is stretched thin. Raley (oblique) and Robles (shoulder) are both expected to be sidelined until at least July. In their absence, Seattle had been leaning on infielders like Miles Mastrobuoni and Leo Rivas to plug gaps in the outfield. The addition of Taveras gives them a true outfielder with major league experience—505 games across six seasons—and a proven postseason track record, including starting all five World Series games for Texas in 2023.

The Mariners also reinstated utility man Dylan Moore from the injured list and designated righty Luis F. Castillo for assignment. Taveras won’t be asked to carry the offense, but if he can replicate even a fraction of his 2023 success—.266 average, 14 homers, and 14 steals—he’ll be a welcome piece for a first-place team trying to stay afloat in the AL West.
