Dodgers Acquire Former Top MLB Prospect From Pirates

The Los Angeles Dodgers have claimed former top MLB prospect Brent Honeywell Jr. off waivers from the Pittsburgh Pirates, according to MLB.com's Mark Feinsand.

Honeywell, now 29, was once highly regarded in the Tampa Bay Rays system before his career was hampered by a series of significant injuries, including Tommy John surgery and multiple elbow fractures.

Despite these setbacks, Honeywell has shown flashes of his potential, most recently posting a 2.70 ERA in two major league outings with the Pirates this season. Prior to his brief stint with Pittsburgh, he recorded a 4.85 ERA over 39 innings in Triple-A in 2024.

Honeywell's career has been a tumultuous one. Drafted in the second round of the 2014 MLB Draft by the Rays, he spent considerable time in their minor league system, notably with the Durham Bulls, where he maintained solid stats, including a 3.64 ERA.

He made his MLB debut on April 11, 2021, but only appeared in three games for the Rays, pitching to an 8.31 ERA. His career then saw him traded to the Oakland Athletics and later joining the San Diego Padres and Chicago White Sox, with his best major league season being with the Padres, recording a 4.05 ERA over 46.2 innings in 2023.

For the Dodgers, Honeywell represents a low-risk, high-reward acquisition that could strengthen their bullpen.

Despite having one of the best bullpens in baseball, the Dodgers have faced recent struggles, and Honeywell's addition provides much-needed depth.

If he can stay healthy and regain his form, Honeywell could become a valuable asset as the Dodgers make their postseason push.
