New York Mets Top Prospect Joining Team As Catcher Deals With Injury

The New York Mets are making preparations to call up highly regarded prospect Francisco Alvarez for their upcoming series against the Cincinnati Reds.

The move is seen as a precautionary measure following an injury sustained by starting catcher Omar Narvaez during Wednesday's game in Milwaukee. Narvaez's calf injury will be evaluated by the team doctors, and if he needs to be placed on the injured list, Alvarez is expected to replace him on the active roster.

Alvarez has been performing well at Triple-A Syracuse, where he has recorded a home run and a double, among other hits.

If he does make it to the Mets' roster, the young catcher is likely to share playing time with Tomas Nido behind the plate and could potentially be used as a designated hitter while Narvaez is out.

It will be interesting to see how he adapts to the big league level, should he get the opportunity to do so. Photo Credit:  Rich Storry-USA TODAY Sports
