Pirates Recall Starter for Debut; Option Outfielder

The Pittsburgh Pirates have recalled pitcher Johan Oviedo from Triple-A Indianapolis.

Oviedo will make his Pirates debut in a start Friday night against the Toronto Blue Jays.

Oviedo was acquired from the St. Louis Cardinals as part of the Jose Quintana trade on the August 1st trade deadline.
The twenty-four-year-old was impressive in his time with Triple-A Indianapolis, allowing just one earned run while striking out 13 over 11 innings. In the majors this season, Oviedo has posted a solid 3.20 ERA, 1.30 WHIP and 26 strikeouts over 25 innings with the Cardinals. He's appeared in 14 games and made one start.

The Pirates have optioned outfielder Cal Mitchell.

Mitchell, for the most part, has been nothing special in the majors this season, holding a poor .204/.241/.336 slash line, with four home runs, 13 RBIs and one stolen base over 44 games in his rookie season.

He is a former second-round pick of the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 2017 MLB Draft.
