White Sox Catcher Could Be Back Sooner Than Expected

White Sox catcher Yasmani Grandal has been cleared to ramp up baseball activities.

It was first reported that if all goes well in the next few days the thirty-three year old could possibly avoid a rehab assignment. However, Scott Merkin of MLB.com reports that Grandal is expected to go on a rehab assignment prior to being activated. Out since June 11 with lower back spasms, Grandal is eligible to come off the 10-day injured list on Wednesday.

The former All-Star catcher has disappointed this season, hitting a measly .185/.294/.237 with two home runs and 15 RBIs, in 50 games. It's not like there's been much competition at the position in Chicago though as his counterpart Reese McGuire is only hitting .239, with zero home runs and nine RBIs, in 39 games.

The White Sox are still trying to get back to a competitive level, sporting an underwhelming 32-33 record nearing the midway mark of the season.
