MLB Rumors: Blue Jays Received Trade Offers for 2 Players
The Toronto Blue Jays were busy before the MLB lockout spending money on free agents, losing a few of their own, and discussing multiple trade scenarios with other teams. Ross Atkins and Mark Shapiro have made it clear the team is going for it these next few seasons and expect some moves out of Toronto to upgrade their roster. Before the lockout, the team had received several trade offers on two specific players.
Cavan Biggio
The one-time top-10 prospect for the Blue Jays had himself a tough season in 2021 as injuries got the best of him. Biggio only managed to play 79 games last season, hitting .224, driving in 27 runs while smacking seven home runs. His walk rate was way down and there's growing concerns over his pitch selection at the plate. After an amazing rookie season in 2019 where he finished top-5 in rookie of the year voting, it's been a bit down hill for Biggio in Toronto ever since.
The team isn't sold on him being their everyday second or third baseman at this point and teams had been calling Atkins and Shapiro about his availability. He's under team control until 2026 so any trade by the Blue Jays would include a big piece coming back the other way. Biggio was discussed in a Kris Bryant trade last season with the Chicago Cubs but that fell through before he was eventually dealt to the San Francisco Giants. Look for trade talks to pick back up for the Blue Jays once the new agreement is in place.
Lourdes Gurriel Jr
One of the Blue Jays best trade chips, Gurriel Jr has all the tools needed to be successful on the ball diamond. He plays a gold glove caliber left field and considering he came up an infielder, you have to give the Blue Jays a ton of credit for being patient and properly developing his game. Last season Gurriel Jr hit a very respectable .276 and clobbered 21 HR and drove in 84. The Blue Jays have some depth in their outfielder with Randal Grichuk, George Springer and Teoscar Hernandez so it's likely they move Gurriel to find some help at either second or third base. The 28-year-old is under team control until 2025 and the only way Toronto gives him up would be a huge talent coming the other way that has all-star potential. Sometimes the best trades you make are the ones you don't.
