Chicago Cubs Sign Reliever

The Chicago Cubs have signed Matt Dermody to a minor league contract.

Dermody spent the 2021 campaign in Japan with the Seibo Lions of the NPB. In 11 appearances with the team, he had a 0-2 record, 5.13 ERA, and 22 strikeouts. It's fair to say that he did have his struggles there. Now, after just one season, he will be heading back to North America with the Cubs to try to rebound.

Dermody last pitched in the majors in 2020 with the Cubs. In his one appearance, he pitched a one-two-three inning and recorded a strikeout. It couldn't have been a better one for him, but it still didn't lead to him getting another chance with the big league club from there. Now, in 2022, he will be aiming to land himself that opportunity again.

When looking at the Cubs' roster, it's fair to say that it isn't among the strongest in the league. Perhaps this fact could help Dermody crawl his way onto their major league roster this go-around. He could be a decent part of their bullpen.

In 29 career games between the Toronto Blue Jays and Cubs, Dermody has a 2-0 record, 21 strikeouts, and a 5.13 ERA. Alas, let's see if he ends up having the chance to build on those numbers with the Cubs this upcoming campaign.
