Historic Home Run in Toronto, All-Time Record

There's been plenty of talk lately about Vlad Guerrero Jr.'s potential MVP credentials, but there are many in Toronto who feel that his Blue Jays teammate may be the team's real MVP this season.

Marcus Semien blasted his 44th home run Wednesday night, becoming the first second baseman in the long history of baseball to reach that lofty mark.

Semien's historic blast came off New York Yankees' ace Gerrit Cole, to give the Blue Jays a 2-0 lead in what is a must-win game for Semien's club. The Jays trail the Yankees by 3 games for the Wild Card lead, and are one game back of the Boston Red Sox, and half-game back of the Seattle Mariners for the 2nd Wild Card spot.

It seems that so many of Semien's bombs have come at crucial times for the Blue Jays, and this one is no different, staking them to an important lead.

The previous record for HR in a season by a 2B is the 43 hit by Davey Johnson in 1973. In fact, there have been only five 40-HR seasons by second basemen in major league history. The list now looks like this:

  1. Marcus Semien, Toronto 44 (2021)
  2. Davey Johnson, Atlanta     43 (1973)
  3. Rogers Hornsby, St. Louis 42 (1922)
  4. Brian Dozier, Minnesota    42 (2016)
  5. Ryne Sandberg, Cubs         40 (1990)
Semien is indeed having an MVP-type season (if not for two-way unicorn Shohei Ohtani, and possibly his teammate Guerrero Jr.). He came into Wednesday's game with a 145 OPS+, and has crossed the 100 RBI mark as well, entering the game with 99. He also had 15 stolen bases.

Semien bet on himself, signing a one-year deal with the Blue Jays last offseason, for $18 million. He is now in line for a massive raise as a free agent this winter.
