UFA Sonny Gray Wastes No Time Announcing His Intentions for 2027

After a career year, veteran 36-year-old pitcher Sonny Gray was considering retirement. But he sent a text to the Boston Globe's Alex Speier Friday afternoon making his intentions for 2027 clear.
My family and I have talked about it and it’s an easy decision. I still want to win a World Series, whether that is Boston or with whoever wants me.

Intriguingly, the statement indicates that he'd be willing to continue his career in Beantown, which is contrary to what it sounded like a week ago.

The way his season ended in Boston—being unceremoniously yanked early, in the 5th inning, of the Red Sox' elimination game in the Wild Card Series, it seemed that he was suggesting after that game that he had soured on the Red Sox.

When he was asked if the BoSox were a destination he'd consider if he returned to the mound, all he could say was, "I don't know." That came directly after he lamented about the early hook he received from manager Chad Tracy in that final game.

"I think I'm the best pitcher in the American League going through the order the third time," Gray said. "I think that's a fact. Yeah, I mean, I would have liked to live or die with me in that moment, but that's the competitor I am...I would have liked to (have) been trusted in that moment."

Nevertheless, we suppose if the Red Sox come up with the money that Gray will command, he would give it a good, hard look.

But after the 2.72 ERA he posted with an 18-5 record along with a 149:46 strikeout-to-walk ratio, there will be plenty of suitors for the three-time All-Star who turns 37 next month.
