Red Sox Could Finally Trade Former All-Star This Winter

Boston has flirted with trading Jarren Duran for two offseasons running and backed off both times. 

This winter might be different.

Poster Child For Change Of Scenery

MLB.com's Mark Feinsand named Duran on his list of offseason trade candidates.

Feinsand called him the "poster child" for change-of-scenery players around the league, pointing to a crowded Boston outfield as the real issue. 

With Roman Anthony, Ceddanne Rafaela and Wilyer Abreu all healthy and productive, there simply isn't an everyday spot for Duran if all three stay on the roster. 

His numbers back up the case for moving him. The 2024 All-Star has 20 home runs and is a stolen base away from a 20-20 season, but his OPS has fallen off a cliff, down well over a hundred points from his breakout year. 

Boston won't get star value in return, but that's been the expectation since insiders started floating this idea back in the summer. 

Outfield Surplus Could Fund A Rotation Need

He's still controlled for two more seasons, which means Boston isn't being forced into a fire sale. 

They can actually use him as an asset instead of just clearing a logjam. With the rotation shaping up as an offseason need, turning a surplus outfielder into pitching help is the kind of move front offices look to make, especially with four outfielders who can all start on a roster built for three. 

The question isn't really whether Duran has trade value anymore, but rather Boston finally decides an outfield that deep is worth less than fixing a rotation that isn't.
