Diamondbacks Claim Former Blue Jays Outfielder, One Day After DFA

Just 24 hours after being designated for assignment by the Toronto Blue Jays, Jesus Sanchez has found a new home, being claimed off waivers by the Arizona Diamondbacks.

The move comes after the D-Backs DFA'd Lourdes Gurriel Jr. on the weekend.  

Sanchez batted .260 with eight home runs and 35 RBIs this season with the Jays in 269 at-bats, with a .734 OPS. The left-handed batter hit .276 with a .781 OPS against righties. 

But it wasn't his offense that led Toronto to DFA Sanchez. It was his atrocious fielding in left.

Sanchez's minus-9 Fielding Run Value ranks in the 3rd percentile this season per Baseball Savant. In a percentile range of 1 to 100, 3 is not ideal, to say the least. 

The D-Backs, like the Jays, are scrapping to try to get into a Wild Card spot, so unforced errors in the outfield like Sanchez was prone to make could be a game—or a season—killer, and the Snakes would be best advised to keep him in the DH spot. 

If Arizona likes what they see from Sanchez at the plate, he has another year of team control, should they decide to exercise it for 2027.

The 28-year-old has a .727 OPS in seven MLB seasons with the Miami Marlins, Houston Astros and the Blue Jays.
