Report: Angels Will Push To Trade 2 Star Players This Offseason

The Los Angeles Angels were one of the most notable "sellers" at the trade deadline, and had some big names up for grabs. And while they did swing trades for the likes of Jo Adell, Jose Soriano and Kirby Yates and others, two of the most enticing names were not dealt. But that might not last for long.

According to a report by Jeff Fletcher of the Orange County Register, the Angels will continue to talk trade this offseason on shortstop Zach Neto and starting pitcher Reid Detmers.

“It’s also possible the Angels could trade Neto and/or Reid Detmers to get some hitting prospects. (They had conversations on both of them before the deadline, so I would expect those talks to continue in the winter)," Fletcher wrote.

Others have noted the continued availability of the two Angels stars as well.

Mike Axisa of CBS Sports agreed that there will be renewed interest in them this winter.

“Reid Detmers and Zach Neto remained despite significant interest in both, and it stands to reason that interest will continue into the offseason,” Axisa wrote. “The Angels did nice work in a seller’s market at the deadline, and they figure to clean up if they move these two over the winter."

3 teams are potential trade destinations this winter for Reid Detmers

In fact, Axisa has even named three potential landing spots for Detmers:

  • St. Louis Cardinals
  • Chicago Cubs
  • Washington Nationals

All three teams have had better-than-expected seasons, but they each need to fortify their rotations, so Detmers could remain a target.

Which teams could engage in Zach Neto talks with Angels this winter?

Neto was tied heavily to the Boston Red Sox near the trade deadline, as well as the Minnesota Twins. The latter is trying out a top shortstop prospect from its own organization as we head down the stretch in Kaelen Culpepper. He is off to a very nice start to his major league career, meaning the Twins' interest could die off. Meanwhile, Boston's top prospect, and the No. 3 ranked in all of baseball, Franklin Arias, should be the man at short for the Red Sox next season.

One other team that might have interest in Neto would be the Toronto Blue Jays. While Andres Gimenez is one of the top fielding shortstops around, his offense, aside from the occasional big hit now and then, remains far below major league average, with a 75 OPS+.

Another would be the Atlanta Braves, who have been looking for a legit starter at short since Dansby Swanson left after the 2022 season.
