The Padres are just one game back in the Wild Card chase, and with this trade have signalled that they're buyers, in their attempt to try to make the postseason. They were thought to be tinkering with the idea of selling as well, but now they're getting a big bump for their pitching staff down the stretch.
Padres bolster rotation with former Cy Young winner
The Padres' rotation was badly in need of a boost, with Nick Pivetta and Joe Musgrove still out for several weeks and Lucas Giolito out as well. Adding a left-hander was another key need for the Friars.
With the bullpen getting healthier, led by the best closer in baseball, Mason Miller, San Diego is primed to make a push.
Ray was the Cy Young winner in 2021 for the Toronto Blue Jays. He made it back to All-Star status last year with the Giants and is having another terrific season with a 3.08 ERA and holding batters to a .226 average.
In exchange, the Giants are receiving Joniel Hernandez and Miguel Mendez from the Padres.
