MLB Rumors: Blue Jays & Marlins Linked To Trade

Miami Marlins starting pitcher Sandy Alcantara reacts during 2026 game.

The Toronto Blue Jays won the American League pennant last fall and pushed the Los Angeles Dodgers to Game 7 of the World Series.

They are currently 29-31 with Jose Berrios, Shane Bieber, and Cody Ponce all on the injured list simultaneously.

They just got back Dylan Cease and Max Scherzer from injury. Berrios and Ponce are both likely done for the season.

ESPN's Jeff Passan included the Blue Jays in his trade deadline preview as a team that could target Miami Marlins ace Sandy Alcantara if they decide to buy before August 3, and multiple analysts have since made the same connection.

"The Blue Jays have been dealing with pitching injuries left and right," Sports Illustrated's Patrick McAvoy wrote. "If there was a team out there that could use an ace, it would be Toronto right now."

Why This Trade Makes Sense For Both Sides

Alcantara is 30 years old with a $21 million club option for 2027, a 2022 NL Cy Young Award on his resume, and a 2026 season that has been uneven but not discouraging.

He ranks second in MLB in innings pitched with 82.1, averaging more than six and a half innings per start, which is precisely what a Blue Jays rotation decimated by injuries needs.

His ERA sits around 4.00 entering June, and he's had a rough May, but previously threw a complete game shutout in his second start of the season and went 8.1 innings in his third.

The Marlins are 22-29 and nowhere near contention, making Alcantara the most actionable trade asset in Miami's system heading into the summer.

A deal sending Toronto's fourth-ranked prospect Ricky Tiedemann and eighth-ranked outfielder RJ Schreck to Miami in exchange for Alcantara has been floated as a potential deal.
