Blue Jays DFA Pitcher As Max Scherzer Hits The Mound Again

Mad Max is back. With the return of Max Scherzer to the Toronto Blue Jays pitching staff, someone had to pay the DFA price, and it was a pretty easy decision.

It was a short and unremarkable stint for right-hander Connor Seabold. The 30-year-old made five appearances totaling 3.1 innings for the injury-riddled Jays staff, all in low-leverage opportunities. And it wasn't impressive, as he posted an 8.10 ERA. He has now been designated for assignment.

Seabold posted more reasonable numbers in his previous run this season, with the Detroit Tigers. A 3.45 ERA across 15 innings with a 14:5 strikeout to walk ratio was enough to intrigue the Blue Jays when they needed an arm. Perhaps he's able to land another gig elsewhere. He's out of options and could opt for free agency once he clears waivers rather than report to Triple-A.

Scherzer returns to Blue Jays rotation, starts Wednesday

As mentioned, this move coincides with the return of Mad Max to the Jays rotation.  The three-time Cy Young winner comes off the IL and is immediately inserted as the starting pitcher for Wednesday's games against the Philadelphia Phillies.

Scherzer was out with right forearm tendinitis and left ankle inflammation. Ah, the joys of trying to maintain a big league career while on the verge of turning 42.

In five starts for Toronto this season, Scherzer has posted an ugly 9.64 ERA with a 1.60 WHIP and a 10:8 K/BB ratio. He'll try to recapture at least some of his youth as he returns to the rotation.
